Mountain clover

Mountain clover is quite common in the eastern parts of southern and central Sweden, but it is also rare in other areas. It grows in dry soils such as slopes and sparse forest edges, often on calcareous soil.

Mountain clover blooms in June-July with small, pale yellowish-white flowers that sit together in round heads. The leaves are three-fingered and have long narrow pointed leaflets with a finely sawn edge.

The world distribution includes the deciduous forest areas of Central and Eastern Europe and the northern Mediterranean area.

The species name montanum comes from the Latin mons (mountain) and means 'that grows in mountainous areas'. The family name Trifolium comes from the Latin tres (three) and folium (leaves), the name was already used by Pliny and refers to the three-fingered leaves.
