Maiden Pink is fairly common from Scania to Medelpad, less common or temporary further north. It grows on dry meadow slopes, at forest edges and roadsides. It is quite similar to the unusual species 'knippnejlika' (D. armeria), but in the latter the flowers are several together in small dense bunches.
Worldwide distribution covers large parts of Europe and extends into continental parts of Asia.
The species name deltoides comes from the Greek delta (triangular) and refers to the shape of the petals. The family name Dianthus comes from the Greek dios (Zeus, god) and anthos (flower) and means 'Zeus flower',
The flowers can be eaten and used as decoration. They can be added fresh to wine and salads.
