Vedby borg

This is the northernmost ancient ringfort on Öland, built on the headland between two now drained lakes, Vedborm swamp and Vedby swamp. Of the ancient ringfort, a low, collapsed and overgrown stone wall remains around an oval courtyard that has a maximum length of 160 m. Two gates have existed, in the north and the south. The wall has a maximum height of 1 m. About 500 m and 600 m south of the castle there are remains of two, next to 2.5 m high walls, which are probably contemporaneous with the ringfort and have formed an outer defense to block off the headland between the two lakes.

The ringforts on Öland are traditionally dated to the time of migration (400-550 AD). Today it is known that many are built earlier than that. They were built as a defense in external attacks, but several have also served as trading posts.
