Bårby borg

Bårby borg is the only ancient ringfort on Öland that uses a natural cliff as protection. The ringfort consists of a mighty semicircular embankment towards the edge of the castle, which has provided a natural protection to the west. The diameter of the castle is 150 m. The interior of the castle has been cultivated. The findings state that the ringfort had two periods of settlement, a period of migration and a medieval period in the same way as Eketorp and Gråborg. Among the finds is a Byzantine gold coin minted for Emperor Justinius, 518-527 e v t. From the ringfort you look out over Mörbylångadalen.

The ringforts on Öland are traditionally dated to the time of migration (400-550 AD). Today it is known that many are built earlier than that. They were built as a defense in external attacks, but several have also served as trading posts.
