Axveronika is common on Öland and Gotland, but also occurs sparingly in other landscapes from Scania to Uppland. It usually grows on dry and open, calcareous soil. It is most common on Alvaren's dry meadows.

Axveronika has a continental distribution in Europe and Asia.

Axveronika is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant, but more common in cultivation is the subspecies silververonika (ssp. Incana).

The species name spicata comes from the Latin spica (ax) and refers to the axillary inflorescence. The name Veronica is considered by some writers to honor Saint Veronica, who wiped Jesus' feet.
