Sheep's-bit

Förekomst: Rather common

Sheep's-bit occur from Scania to Uppland. It grows on lean, often sandy soil and is quite common, especially in the southernmost landscapes. Sheep's-bit bloom from June to August with small flowers that sit together in a top-set head. The flowers are light blue or rarely white, deeply five-lobed with a long protruding pin.

The species name montana comes from the Latin mons (mountain) and refers to the fact that it often grows on mountains and dry slopes. The older Swedish name 'monke' is already mentioned by Linnaeus. The family name Jasione comes from the Greek iasos (medicine), the name was already used by Theophrastus (300 BC).
