Elder-flowered Marsh Orchid are common on sun-open, dry meadows, usually low-calcium but humus-rich meadow oat dry meadows. The species belongs to the old, open pastures but does not tolerate hard grazing. Rich habitats are found in the middle of Stora Alvaret, where the island is widest. Together with Early Purple Orchid, it is the orchid that bloom the earliest.
Elder-flowered Marsh Orchid lack nectar, but despite this, the herb manages to trick inexperienced hop queens into visiting and pollinating the flowers. Sand bees also pollinate this orchid.
There are two theories about the plant's Swedish name Adam och Eva . According to one, the name comes from the fact that it has two color forms, morphs, which often occur together. According to the second theory, this is because the shape of the tubers is human-like.
