Blue hair grass

Blue hair grass occurs only in Skåne, Blekinge, Öland and on Gotska Sandön. It grows on sandy fields and other dry and sandy, often calcareous soils. It is the character plant of the special biotope 'sand steppe*, which occurs in areas with high heat radiation and low precipitation. The soil consists of calcareous sand and lacks a layer of soil. The biotope requires repeated agitation of the surface layer so that calcareous sand is exposed again.

The species blooms in June-July.

The species name glauca comes from the Latin glaucus (blue-gray) and refers to the color of the leaves. The family name Koeleria honors the German professor Georg Ludwig Koeler (1765-1807).
